Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, established in 1952. Covering over 3,800 square kilometers, it spans across lush savannahs, tropical forests, and the wide banks of the Nile River. The park is most famous for the Murchison Falls—a dramatic spot where the Nile River is forced through a narrow 7-meter gorge, then plunges 43 meters into the “Devil’s Cauldron” below, creating a roaring waterfall and continuous mist.
Murchison Falls is part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which also includes Budongo Forest and Kaniyo Pabidi, offering one of the most diverse wildlife experiences in East Africa.
Key animals you’ll see include:
African elephants
Lions (often seen hunting in the open savannah)
Leopards
Giraffes (home to the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe)
Buffaloes
Hippos and crocodiles along the Nile
Antelope species like Uganda kob, oribi, and hartebeest
Birdlife is exceptional, with over 450 species recorded, including:
The shoebill stork (rare and sought after by birdwatchers)
Goliath heron
Secretary bird
Abyssinian ground hornbill
Kingfishers, bee-eaters, and fish eagles
A must-do experience! Cruise upstream on the Nile with views of hippos, crocodiles, and elephants along the riverbanks. You’ll reach the base of Murchison Falls and feel the thunder and mist up close.
Go on early morning or evening drives through the park’s Buligi game tracks to spot predators, grazers, and birdlife. Experienced guides help track animals and offer insight into the park’s ecosystem.
After the boat cruise, you can take a guided hike to the top of the falls. This short but steep climb offers incredible panoramic views and photo opportunities of the Nile’s dramatic drop.
Nearby Budongo Forest is a lush tropical rainforest with a high population of chimpanzees. A guided trek offers a chance to see them in their natural environment.
With varied habitats, Murchison Falls is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Specialized birding safaris can be arranged to focus on rare species.
See the savannah and Nile River from above—an unforgettable sunrise experience.
Dry Season (Dec–Feb and June–Sept): Best for game viewing as animals gather near water sources.
Wet Season (Mar–May and Oct–Nov): Lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching, but some roads may be muddy.
Entry is via the southern or northern gates (access through Masindi or Pakwach).
Combine with trips to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (on the way from Kampala) for a full Big Five experience.
Accommodations range from budget camps to luxury lodges, many with river views.
It’s the only place in East Africa where you can combine powerful waterfalls, a Nile River cruise, and classic savannah wildlife in one destination. Ideal for solo travelers, couples, photographers, and families.
