Who Needs a Visa to Enter Uganda?

As of 2025, Uganda no longer offers visas on arrival for most travelers. All tourists must apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) online before traveling.

Step-by-Step Application Process
Visit the official Uganda e-Visa portal.

Visa Processing Time
The processing time for most tourist e-Visas is between 2 and 3 business days. However, delays may occur during peak travel seasons or due to incomplete documentation. Travelers are advised to apply at least 7 days before their intended departure date to avoid any last-minute issues.
What to Present Upon Arrival in Uganda
Once you arrive in Uganda, typically at Entebbe International Airport or one of the land border points, immigration officials will ask to see the following:
Your valid passport with at least one blank page
Your printed Visa Approval Letter (email copy is not accepted at the border)
A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate
Proof of return or onward travel (air ticket)
Your accommodation booking or tour confirmation
You will then be issued a physical visa sticker in your passport.
Can You Extend Your Tourist Visa?
Yes, tourist visas can be extended while in Uganda. You can apply for an extension at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) office in Kampala. Extensions are typically granted in 90-day increments, with a maximum stay of up to 270 days in total.
To apply for a visa extension, you must:
Visit the Immigration Office before your current visa expires
Present a valid passport
Provide a reason for the extension (such as an extended safari or ongoing travel)
Present a travel itinerary or proof of accommodation
As of now, visa extensions are generally free of charge, but this may be subject to change.
Is Visa on Arrival Still an Option?
No. Uganda officially discontinued visa-on-arrival services for most travelers in 2016 and requires all tourists to obtain an e-Visa before travel. Although there were temporary exceptions due to technical issues in the past, the current policy in 2025 requires pre-approved electronic visas only.
