Uganda Tourist Visa: Everything You Need to Know Before You Travel

If you’re planning a safari, gorilla trekking, or cultural tour in Uganda, securing the proper entry documentation is essential. Uganda, known as the “Pearl of Africa,” welcomes visitors from all over the world, but most travelers must obtain a visa before arrival. This guide by FlightKing Tours & Travel will walk you through the tourist visa process, requirements, fees, and tips to ensure a smooth entry into the country.

Who Needs a Visa to Enter Uganda?

Uganda requires most foreign nationals to obtain a visa prior to arrival. Only a few African and COMESA member countries are visa-exempt for short visits. If you’re unsure whether you need a visa, you should consult your country’s Ugandan embassy or refer to the official immigration website.

As of 2025, Uganda no longer offers visas on arrival for most travelers. All tourists must apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) online before traveling.

Uganda’s e-Visa System

The e-Visa system is a convenient online application portal that allows travelers to apply for various types of visas without visiting an embassy or consulate. Once approved, you’ll receive a Visa Approval Letter, which you must present upon arrival in Uganda.

The official Uganda e-Visa website is:

Types of Tourist Visas

Uganda offers several types of tourist-related visas through its e-Visa system:

Single Entry Tourist Visa
This is the most common visa for tourists and is valid for up to 90 days. It allows one entry into Uganda for the purpose of leisure, sightseeing, or visiting.

East Africa Tourist Visa
This visa allows travel between Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda with a single visa. It is ideal for travelers doing multi-country safaris or regional tours. The visa is valid for 90 days and must be applied for from the first country you intend to visit.

Multiple Entry Visa
Available for 6, 12, or 24 months. These are ideal for frequent travelers, business visitors, or those with family in the region. These visas require additional documentation and justification.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Visit the official Uganda e-Visa portal.

  2. Select the appropriate visa type (Tourist Visa, East Africa Visa, etc.).

  3. Fill out the online application form with your personal details, travel dates, and passport information.

  4. Upload the required documents.

  5. Pay the visa fee using a valid Visa or MasterCard.

  6. Submit the application.

  7. Wait for an email notification with your Visa Approval Letter (usually within 2 to 3 working days).

  8. Print the approval letter and carry it with you during travel.

Required Documents

To complete the e-Visa application successfully, you will need the following:

  • A valid passport (with at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry)

  • A recent passport-sized photo (digital)

  • A scanned copy of your passport’s biographical data page

  • A confirmed flight itinerary or ticket

  • A hotel booking or tour confirmation letter (FlightKing Tours provides this upon booking)

  • A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for all travelers over 1 year of age)

  • Payment via a valid debit or credit card

Ensure all uploaded documents are clear and legible to avoid delays.

Visa Fees (Subject to Change)

  • Single Entry Tourist Visa: $50 USD

  • East Africa Tourist Visa: $100 USD

  • Multiple Entry Visas:

    • 6 months: $100 USD

    • 12 months: $150 USD

    • 24 months: $200 USD

All fees are paid online during application. They are non-refundable, even if your application is denied.

Visa Processing Time

The processing time for most tourist e-Visas is between 2 and 3 business days. However, delays may occur during peak travel seasons or due to incomplete documentation. Travelers are advised to apply at least 7 days before their intended departure date to avoid any last-minute issues.

What to Present Upon Arrival in Uganda

Once you arrive in Uganda, typically at Entebbe International Airport or one of the land border points, immigration officials will ask to see the following:

  • Your valid passport with at least one blank page

  • Your printed Visa Approval Letter (email copy is not accepted at the border)

  • A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate

  • Proof of return or onward travel (air ticket)

  • Your accommodation booking or tour confirmation

You will then be issued a physical visa sticker in your passport.

Can You Extend Your Tourist Visa?

Yes, tourist visas can be extended while in Uganda. You can apply for an extension at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) office in Kampala. Extensions are typically granted in 90-day increments, with a maximum stay of up to 270 days in total.

To apply for a visa extension, you must:

  • Visit the Immigration Office before your current visa expires

  • Present a valid passport

  • Provide a reason for the extension (such as an extended safari or ongoing travel)

  • Present a travel itinerary or proof of accommodation

As of now, visa extensions are generally free of charge, but this may be subject to change.

Is Visa on Arrival Still an Option?

No. Uganda officially discontinued visa-on-arrival services for most travelers in 2016 and requires all tourists to obtain an e-Visa before travel. Although there were temporary exceptions due to technical issues in the past, the current policy in 2025 requires pre-approved electronic visas only.

Do not board your flight without a visa approval letter, as you may be denied entry or refused boarding at your departure airport.
